Definition
Allodium refers historically to property, generally land, held independently of a superior feudal lord and without the obligations normally attached to feudal tenure.

Historical and legal context
Allodium was distinguished from a fief by the nature of the relationship between the holder and any superior lord. Where feudal tenure typically entailed obligations — military service, dues, homage — allodial property was held free of such dependencies. The allodial holder owed no service and recognised no lord over that land.

Why this term belongs in the Liberty MED
Allodium helps document the relationships between liberty, property, autonomy and dependence that lie at the heart of the Liberty MED. By identifying a form of landholding defined precisely by its freedom from feudal obligation, the term makes visible the spectrum along which historical actors could occupy more or less dependent positions — and the vocabulary through which those positions were named and contested.
The term is not intrinsically masculinist. It designates a legal category, not a gendered subject, and was applied to property held by institutions, communities and women as well as men. Its inclusion in the Liberty MED contributes vocabulary for thinking comparatively about different historical forms of freedom and ownership, without presupposing who their holders were.
Masculinist relevance
The concept of allodium can enrich reflection on autonomy, property, inheritance and material independence as dimensions of men’s experience across history. Allodial tenure — land held free of feudal obligation — offers a historical language for thinking about the material, legal and symbolic conditions that shaped men’s autonomy: what it meant to own without owing, to hold without dependence, and to transmit without permission.
